What is Guided Imagery?

Guided Imagery Meditation can be used by young children all the way up through the elderly.

Guided Imagery Research has also shown that stimulating the brain through imagery may have a direct effect on both the endocrine and nervous systems, which lead to changes in immune system function.  The use of a Guided Imagery C.D. is a simple, low cost, and effective tool for stress reduction and stress management.

Guided imagery is based on the concept that your body and mind are connected. Using all of your senses, your body seems to respond as though what you are imagining is real. lemonAn example often used is to imagine an orange or a lemon in great detail-the smell, the color, the texture of the peel.

Continue to imagine the smell of the lemon, and then see yourself taking a bite of the lemon and feel the juice squirting into your mouth.

Many people salivate when they do this. This exercise demonstrates how your body can respond to what you are imagining.
You can achieve a relaxed state when you imagine all the details of a safe, comfortable place, such as a beach or a garden. This relaxed state may aid healing, learning, creativity, and performance.

Stress and Cancer
Guided Imagery Can Help Cancer Patients
Cope More Effectively with Cancer Treatments

Guided Imagery has been used for over 30 years for patients coping with cancer and canpinkribboncer treatments. Over a hundred documented studies have shown that Guided Imagery was effective in managing stress, anxiety, depression, pain and the side effects of cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

A recent randomized clinical trial involving Guided Imagery for Breast Cancer showed that women with early stage breast cancer, found that the use of a Guided Imagery C. D. was beneficial for easing stress and anxiety prior to chemotherapy and radiation radiation therapy, including fears or pain, dependency, their physical appearance and the recurrence of cancer.  According to The American Cancer Association, It has been clinically proven to decrease the side effects of treatments such as fatigue, nausea and vomiting.

Guided Imagery (i.e., Guided Meditation, Guided Visualization, Imagery, etc.) is a process where the patient is assisted in imagining positive images and desired outcomes to specific situations. 

A cancer patient can use Guided Imagery to discover what they are trying to accomplish with the cancer treatment. A mental image can be created.  For example, patients are asked to focus on feeling stronger or getting better. Guided Imagery has been clinically proven to increase immune functioning which is imperative for the cancer patient. 

Individuals can cope with their cancer treatment or cancer surgery remaining calm, in control and relaxed. The use of a Guided Imagery C. D. has also been clinically shown to decrease side effects of cancer treatments such as nausea and vomiting.

Guided Imagery for Depression

Guided Imagery For Postpartum Depression

Postpartum depression is depression after the birth of a baby. Between 10 and 15 percent of women who give birth are clinically diagnosed with this form of depression.

Brooke Shield recently came forward and published a book brookepost about her personal post part um depression story. (Postpartum psychosis, which is sometimes confused with postpartum depression in the media, is a rarer and much more serious mood disorder that requires immediate medical care.)

After pregnancy, signs of depression may also include being afraid of hurting the baby or oneself and not having any interest in the baby.

Any of these symptoms during and after pregnancy that last longer than two weeks are signs of depression:

    • Feeling restless or irritable
    • Feeling sad, hopeless, and overwhelmed
    • Crying a lot
    • Having no energy or motivation
    • Eating too little or too much
    • Sleeping too little or too much
    • Trouble focusing, remembering, or making decisions
    • Feeling worthless and guilty
    • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities
    • Withdrawal from friends and family
    • Having headaches, chest pains, heart palpitations (the heart beating fast and feeling like it is skipping beats), or hyperventilation (fast and shallow breathing)

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) refers to depressive symptoms that occur about one week prior to menstruation and disappear after you menstruate.

begoniasmSeasonal affective disorder (SAD) (aka: Winter Depression)

According to The Mayo Clinic, "Seasonal affective disorder is a cyclic, seasonal condition. This means that signs and symptoms usually come back and go away at the same times every year.

Usually, seasonal affective disorder symptoms appear during late fall or early winter and go away during the warmer, sunnier days of spring and summer.

Fall and winter SAD (winter depression)
Symptoms of winter-onset seasonal affective disorder include:

  • Depression
  • Hopelessness
  • Anxiety
  • Loss of energy
  • Social withdrawal
  • Oversleeping
  • Loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed
  • Appetite changes, especially a craving for foods high in carbohydrates
  • Weight gain
  • Difficulty concentrating and processing information

The depression generally lifts during spring and summer. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) may be effectively treated with light therapy. However nearly 65% of those suffering from Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) do not respond to light therapy alone.

imsoldiersmImagine seeing a fellow soldier killed by a roadside bomb. Or searching through the rubble of the World Trade Center for survivors.

Or being sexually assaulted. You're probably trying to push those images out of your head as you want to go on with your life.

These feelings have been going through people's minds for centuries. We are now realizing that it affects people other than just those who've been through war. It involves anyone that has experienced a severe trauma in their life.

A national study of American civilians conducted in 2002 reported that PTSD occurs in about 47% of all Americans. Most survivors of trauma return to normal given a time to heal emotionally and physically. However, there are a small percentage of people that will have stress reactions that do not go away on their own, or may even get worse over time. These individuals may develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. (P.T.S.D.).

withdrawnPost Traumatic Stress is not just for those in or returning from the military. Traumatic events can be the loss of a loved one or family instabilities.

However, even hearing about a major illness or death of a spouse is often enough to put a person into Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Many instances have been the cause of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (P.T.S.D.) Trauma either presumed or real is a common factor. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (P.T.S.D.) is marked by clear biological changes as well as psychological symptoms. srt

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (P.T.S.D.) is complicated by the fact that it frequently occurs in conjunction with related disorders such as depression, substance abuse, problems of memory and cognition, and other problems of physical and mental health.

It is important that people become aware of the issues and reasons that are causing the person's stress. Everything that they are feeling is ok. However, becoming "stuck" in those feelings is not. It is important to become aware of them then work through them.

Military Sexual Abuse of Women
Guided Imagery Can Help
Military Sexual Abused Women Cope

A recent report financed by the Department of Defense revealed that nearly one-third of a nationwide sample of female veterans seeking health care through the V.A. said they experienced Military Sexual Abuse by rape or attempted rape during their service.

Of that group, 37 percent said they were raped multiple times, and 14 percent reported they were gang-raped. Perhaps even more tellingly, a small study financed by the V.A. following the gulf war suggests that rates of both sexual harassment and assault rise during wartime.

The researchers who carried out this study also looked at the prevalence of P.T.S.D. symptoms - including flashbacks, nightmares, emotional numbing and round-the-clock anxiety - and found that women who endured sexual assault were more likely to develop PTSD than those who were exposed to combat.

Guided Imagery Study By Duke:

Guided Imagery for Military Sexual Trauma-Related Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (P.T.S.D.)

(This study is currently recruiting participants, verified by Duke University, March, 2008. Sponsor: The National Institutes of Health (NIH). Military sexual trauma (MST) is a significant women's mental health issue. There is a crucial need for effective therapies for Military sexual trauma (MST) that are well-tolerated and can be flexibly administered in a variety of treatment settings. Guided Imagery is a novel, transportable intervention technique that meets these requirements and warrants research in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Guided Imagery for Trauma (GIFT) intervention for women veterans with Military sexual trauma (MST) has already been demonstrated to have positive and promising initial results in the first part, pilot study of 15 women veterans according to Duke.

Guided Imagery and
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (P.T.S.D.)

They embarrassed to reveal what they are feeling inside. Instead of opening up to others, getting support, they often repress their feelings leading to depression and often face serious physical consequences.

Guided Imagery by way of a Guided Imagery C. D. allows individuals to face their feelings, fears and emotions head on.

They are able to confront their emotional pain, and by way of the story on the imagery C. D. they can learn ways to work through through them, and then move forward in their life. Guided Imagery has become a valuable tool for those suffering with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (P.T.S.D.) .

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, unfortunately has become increasingly prominent in our soldiers going to and returning from Iraq. Many of our soldiers being redeployed are suffering from depression and fear. Guided Imagery has made a significant impact on Combat Stress and Deployment Stress.

The National Center for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder repeatedly tells individuals to

  • Reach out to others
  • Do not hold feelings inside
  • There are so many people that love and cherish you
  • They want to help
  • Get the support that you need
  • Find healthy ways of coping such as Guided Imagery, visualization and meditation practices including yoga

Diane Tusek is on the governing board of Trustees for The National Association of American Veterans. Guided Imagery for Depression in Adults
and Depression in Children and Teens

joeseifertdepAccording to The National Institute of Mental Health 2 out of 10 people suffer from some sort of depression.

Major depressive disorder, also called major depression, is characterized by a combination of symptoms that interfere with a person's ability to work, sleep, study, eat, and enjoy once everyday meaningful activities.

Major depression is disabling and prevents a person from functioning normally. An episode of major depression may occur only once in a person's lifetime, but more often, it recurs throughout a person's life.

Dysthymic disorder, also called Dysthymic, is characterized by long–term (two years or longer) but less severe symptoms that may not disable a person but can prevent one from functioning normally or feeling well.

Some forms of depression (depressive disorder) exhibit slightly different characteristics than those described above, or they may develop under unique circumstances.

Guided Imagery for Fibromyalgia

According to Dr. Gary Flegal, a world renowned expert on Fibromyalgia, "Fibromyalgia is a condition that causes pain in muscles, joints, ligaments and tendons. The dots in the picture at the right represent tender points found in Fibromyalgia patients. These points are often the foundation of the doctors diagnosis.

fibpainA person diagnosed with fibromyalgia is suffering from pain almost constantly. They hurt all over and frequently feel exhausted.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain in muscles, ligaments and tendons, as well as fatigue, insomnia and multiple tender points.

Previously, fibromyalgia was known by other names such as fibrositis, chronic muscle pain syndrome, psychogenic rheumatism and tension myalgia."

Guided Imagery for Headaches in
Children, Teens and Adults

andreaoverwhelmedAccording to The National Foundation of Headache, "Headache is a frequent symptom in children but deciding whether or not it is due to a serious problem can be a difficult task, even for the most experienced healthcare provider."

Migraine pain is usually throbbing and is almost always accompanied by nausea and vomiting. In children, the headache is often on both sides of the head, instead of just on one side as in adults.

According to Dr., David Rothner from The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, "22% of patients actually come into the clinic over prescribed.

Simple relaxation techniques such as imagery, guided imagery, visualization and meditation can help just as well, if not more."

Emotional fears, anxiety, depression and anger have been clinically shown to have an adverse aprilmeganeffect on headaches. When an individual is under stress, their blood vessels vasodialate, muscles become tense in the neck leading to the symptoms of a headache or migraine.

The use of a Guided Imagery (i.e. Guided Meditation, Visualization, Imagery) by way of a Guided Imagery C. D. ,has helped hundreds of thousands of individuals relax, maintain focus and come to a state of peace and tranquility within minutes.

The use of Guided Imagery for Headaches relaxes the blood vessels allowing blood to flow naturally throughout the body and to the organs that need it such as the heart, lungs and brain, among many other organs.

A well recognized and published Guided Imagery Research Study for Headaches, by Dr. Lisa Mannix at The Cleveland Clinic (see research page) showed that the use of Guided Imagery reduced headaches in one month by up to 62%.

Headache Centers nationally and internationally are utilizing Guided Imagery as routine standard of care for their headache or migrane patients.

Guided Imagery Headache Research

Guided imagery, which combines deep relaxation with positive suggestion, was clinically shown to decrease the onset and painfulness of headaches. Guided Imagery by way of a Guided Imagery C. D. was also helpful in increasing patient ability to cope with headaches. browns

When Mannix et al. studied a group of 260 patients with tension-type headaches, 21.7% of those in the Guided Imagery population reported their headaches much improved, compared to 7.6% of the control group. (p = 0.04).

The authors of a 2003 review of the literature concluded that considerable evidence exists for the efficacy of mind-body techniques such as Guided Imagery, Imagery, relaxation, and hypnosis in the treatment of headaches or migranes.

Guided Imagery to Enhance Sports Performance

Guided Imagery and visualization techniques are routinely used in training in the NFL, Professional sports, college sports, and for athletes all around the globe.

Scott Hamilton stated "the difference between the person that brings home the gold or silver is the person's state of mind."

The use of Guided Imagery allows a person to stay focused on the end result It cuts down fears, doubts, and raises a person's self confidence thus enhancing their sports performance.

Lebron James was recently harassed and hit intentionally with the intent to cause harm and injury. When eased if he was shaken, he responded, "not a bit, keeping the mind focused and being mentally prepared is the key".

Numerous studies in recent years have established that women in pain are more likely to be under treated for their pain. A comprehensive report published in 2001 in The Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics concluded that “women’s pain reports are taken less seriously than men’s, and women receive less aggressive treatment than men for their pain.” It added, “women in pain are more likely to have their pain reports discounted as ‘emotional’ or ‘psychogenic’ and, therefore, ‘not real.’”
